✏️ Behind the Design: How the BFF Mini Was Born

Inspiration Strikes at 7:53 AM

The idea for the BFF Mini didn’t come to me in a design studio or during a product meeting—it happened in the most unexpected place: behind the pharmacy counter at Walgreens in Aliso Viejo, CA.

At the time, I just had my first baby was still a full-time pharmacist while growing Pink Papyrus. One morning, as I was getting ready to open the pharmacy at 8:00 AM sharp, I found myself lost in thought about new products. Suddenly, an idea clicked.

I glanced at the clock—7:53 AM. If I didn’t sketch it out immediately, there was no way I’d remember every detail after an eight-hour shift.

The First Sketch

I grabbed a blank prescription pad, a pen, and quickly sketched the front and back of what would become the BFF Mini. I drew arrows pointing to each part of the design, scribbling notes about functionality, finishes, and materials.

To make sure I didn’t lose the concept, I snapped a photo and sent it to my husband, Kiro, along with a blurb about the idea. By the time I finished, it was 8:02 AM—two minutes past opening—and I had a line of customers waiting. You'd think it would be no big deal, but trust me, the lines in the pharmacy always start forming before the pharmacy gates are actually lifted. Normally, I was early to open, but that morning I knew I had something special. So, despite the anxiety I felt watching the line of patients form, I was so glad I forced myself to quickly sketch out my idea.

Staying True to the Original Vision

All these years later, the BFF Mini has remained remarkably true to that original sketch:

• Space for all the little extras that make dog walking easier

It started with a quick scribble on a prescription pad—but it became one of our most beloved products.
